A new defibrillator has been installed in Guildford, becoming the tenth in the town centre.
Jointly funded by Guildford Borough Council, Guildford Lions and Experience Guildford, it can be found inside Wetherspoons on Bridge Street.
The life-saving equipment is part of Guildford Lions’ pledge to install 100 defibrillators across Surrey, Sussex and Kent as part of their 100th anniversary celebrations.
President of Guildford Lions, Deric Quaile said the club has fitted more than that though: “This is in fact the 104th defibrillator supported by the Lions in the South East counties, thus surpassing the Centennial target.”
A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest.
The high energy shock is called defibrillation, and is an essential life saving step in the chain of survival.
Cllr Iseult Roche, Lead Councillor for Project Apsire Health, Safeguarding and Sport said: “The defibrillator project is extremely important and can truly help save lives.
“It’s a great example of partners working together to provide potentially life-saving equipment which could be essential in an emergency.”
Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nigel Manning was at the opening of the defibrillator on 5 April
Amanda Masters from Experience Guildford added: “Experience Guildford are very pleased to be involved with this project.
“Town centre safety is one of the key areas of our business plan, and with our partnership approach to the Purple Flag this can only be a welcome addition to the safety of our evening and night time visitors.”
There are nine other publicly accessible defibrillators in the town centre, including at the police station, Guildford station and the Friary centre.
These units are known as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) – they’re fully automatic and guide people using them with a series of recorded instructions. Anyone can safely use them regardless of whether or not they have been trained.
